EAST COURT Charles Johnstone
Charles Johnstone’s “East Court” is an homage to the game of Court Tennis also known as Real Tennis , a sport that dates from the 14th century. First played by monks in monasteries in France , the game went on to become the sport of Kings as courts were built at Versailles and Fontainebleau in France and Hampton Court in England. Johnstone not only an aficionado of the game but a winner of many national senior championships plays the game at the Racquet & Tennis Club in New York City . The club has two courts with the “East Court” being the more famous show court. Of the 50 or so courts in the world, the “East Court” is certainly one of the most famous. The thirty three photographs ( 16 in color) in the book are shown on French fold paging. The book also includes an essay by well known writer on Racquet sports , James Zug.
